Automatic Number Plate Recognition (ANPR) is a technology that uses image processing and pattern recognition to recognize and analyze vehicle license plates. With EVT’s software, which can be integrated into a variety of cameras and existing systems and which already has existing commands for license plate recognition, processes can be optimized quickly and easily.
Areas of application for license plate recognition include
- Parking management: In parking garages and parking lots, ANPR systems help with automatic recognition and billing by detecting vehicles as they enter and exit. As a result, both barriers and ticket losses can be avoided.
- Parking lot management: Customer parking lots can be easily managed with real-time occupancy overview, as well as the integration of online booking systems and dynamic pricing.
- Traffic monitoring: Police and traffic authorities use ANPR to monitor traffic violations such as speeding or running red lights.
- Tolling systems: Automated toll booths use ANPR systems to identify vehicles and settle charges.
The biggest challenges in license plate recognition are the variability of license plates, as they differ in font, size, position, shape and even color in different countries. In addition, license plates are often dirty or damaged in everyday life and different lighting conditions (night, rain, fog, etc.) as well as moving vehicles, sometimes at high speeds, make license plate recognition difficult.

- OCR: Optical Character Recognition is a core component of license plate recognition. Today’s systems often use neural networks and deep learning approaches that are able to achieve high recognition rates even under difficult conditions (e.g. soiling, worn signs).
- Deep learning: Deep learning algorithms can be integrated into license plate recognition to improve both the segmentation of the license plate and the recognition of the characters. They train on large data sets with a wide variety of license plates and lighting conditions.
